We can’t say thank-you enough, but we’ll keep trying!
The Out of Sight Wing Fling on May 7th was phenomenal! We can’t thank all of the sponsors and competitors enough for such an outstanding event. We raised $5,000 that will go towards our programming for independent living skills for our blind and visually impaired. We are just thrilled at this and how much this will enable us to enrich lives this summer and the rest of the year. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts–we are already looking forward to next year!
We also want to thank The United Way for the Days of Caring crew for the event we attended on May 12th at the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. It was an outstanding day, and we were particularly blown away by how much the volunteers knew about the garden and were able to educate our people on some things. They loved it; smiles were everywhere.
Many thanks also to all that came and helped with our May 22nd pool party for the youth at Camp Rockfish. Everyone had such a blast and enjoyed the time to get out in the sun and have our first swim of 2016! We, unfortunately, have to say goodbye to one of our youth, Michael McIntryre; he is moving to Ohio to help his mom take care of his grandmother. He is not only a participant but a mentor to our group.
Summer Camp is COMING…. we need youth mentors (volunteers) starting at age 14 and campers ages 6-19. Dates: August 1-August 12th Out of Sight Camp Explosion.. Guaranteed to have a ball…
A Note from Our Executive Director, Terri Thomas:
WOW…..
We want to thank all our sponsors for helping us to make the 2016 “Out of Sight” Wing Fling a SUCCESS:
We could not have done it without our Board, Committee, Staff, Vendors, Walker-Florez Competitors, Judges ( Councilman Bobby Hurst, Motivational Speaker, Don Serate, Dave “The Print Guy” and Tiffany Whitfield), Entertainment, etc. If I left anyone out, charge my mind and not my heart. We could not have asked for a better day to spread the word and raise money for the blind and visually impaired in our community. Congratulations again to our winners, Mother Cluckers, People’s Choice Winners and Jay’s Crazy Chicken, Out of Sight Wing Winner by the judges.
Our participants asked for it, and they got it we are on our way to DC….!
We’ll leave on June 22 and return on June 23. It’ll be a packed and great experience with a tour of the Capitol Building, a White House Tour, 4 hours guided tour of DC on a bus, tram tour through Arlington Cemetery, Dinner and free time at the Smithsonian, all with a one night stay near DC. We are at full capacity with 34 adults attending this trip. Our participants are very excited, and we’re looking forward to facilitating more of these types of activities for our blind and visually impaired of Cumberland County. We can’t wait to take part and then share with you how this experience went!
Until Next Time,
~Terri

VRC Spotlight: Michael McIntrye
Michael McIntrye has been a member of our Center for five years. He is 17 years old and attended Gray’s Creek High School. Mike is such a hard worker; he worked with Carlie C’s in Hope Mills in the meat department. His dream is to become a chef and own his restaurant on a farm, where all the products used in the restaurant will come from that farm. Mike is leaving us to help his mom take care of his grandmother, but we love him and will miss him a lot. He helped all the youth whose visually impairment was worse than his own; his never complained and helped out ALWAYS… We’re gonna miss you, Mike…
