We can’t say thank you enough, but we’ll try!

We want to thank Communicare’s Executive Director, Sarah Hallock and the Cumberland County Manager, Amy Cannon for the use of their facility last month for our Family Meetings. We had over 45 blind and visually impaired in attendance as well as their family members, making it one of our biggest family meetings ever. We also want to send a HUGE thank you to Leola Johnson, Dorothy Harris, Johnnye Mae Merkerson for planning and preparing lunch for all who attended the meeting. You, ladies, blessed us with your preparations and your awesome attention-to-detail in planning a lunch for so many! Your generosity touched our hearts!

Big News!

Thanks to Cumberland Community Foundation who have afforded us this amazing opportunity, our much-anticipated Independent Living Skills Workshops with Amber Crider will kick off this month! We have one class scheduled for September 9th, and another scheduled on September 23rd. Class schedule 9:30- 2:30 and are available for the first (10) to sign up. We can’t wait to get this program rolling and the get the feedback from the first two groups. Call the center to get scheduled. We couldn’t have done this without funding from Chive Charities and the Walker-Florez Group. The class will be at no charge to the attendees; they will prepare their lunch utilizing electric skillets as part of the workshop!

A Note From Our Executive Director, Terri ThomasTerri Thomas

“My ‘Aha Moment’ for the month of August: We needed another driver for transporting our visually impaired to their daily activities, and since I have not hired one yet, I have to drive. Driving means picking up and dropping off our people as well as serving as their eyes for the event. Well, I didn’t want to drive with all the daily demands of being an Executive Director…a slew of extra responsibilities that many cannot imagine. I drove and had an Aha Moment. I was supposed to drive to hear the laughter, to feel the compassion, to see those less visually impaired, help those that are blind or vision loss is worse, and to listen to the compliments of what the program means to them from the heart. The Aha reminded me why I am here and why it is so important. I was glad I was able to drive.
Please come out and volunteer, you WILL make a difference in the lives of our visually impaired.

Summer Wrap-Up: It was a great summer for the adults and kids. The adult’s thank the Massey Hill Lions Club afforded the adults the opportunity to attend Camp Dogwood, a week-long summer camp outside of Charlotte where they enjoy boating, canoeing, shopping, games, socialization and many other camp activities. The kids had a great two (2) week summer camp, Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, Ellington White, Camp Rockfish, and Cape Fear Regional Theatre. Thanks, Summertime Kids (CCF), Youth Growth Stock Trust, Chive Charities and our local trusts, we could not do it without you. What an AWESOME summer!!

We’re looking forward to an outstanding fall. Call the office to sign up to volunteer with us–then I want to hear your Aha Moments too!’

~Terri

uw-days-of-caring-khalil

Khalil Middleton is a Veteran of the US Army and Air Force, recently began his loss of sight journey but has been very instrumental in starting an important ministry for us the mobile barber program. Khalil had been having problems getting to a barber and is unable to cut his hair himself due to the vision impairment. We commend Khalil on his vision. Bernard Webb is now our mobile barber, and we are so excited about this new program. The ladies are coming next. Stay tuned.
