Spring is near, and the VRC plans to rock this month!! On top of our daily and monthly activities, we’re also planning for our 2nd Annual “Out of Sight” Wing Fling to be held on June 24th at Festival Park. We want this unique event to be the best it can be, so we’re putting in the work ahead to plan a dynamic and exciting day that will benefit VRC and be fun for all!

We need VOLUNTEERS!

Enjoying the Carolina Panthers game last year!

The VRC needs YOU; we are in need of volunteers. Helping out with our crew isn’t hard–it’s fun! Even if you’ve never interacted with the blind or visually-impaired, you can help us make a difference. You become a “friend” to someone you have never known, but walk away with a feeling of gratefulness, because you have become the eyes of someone else. You just describe the environment and help them to navigate in new places or situations (for those that need the help). We invite you to join us and find out just how fulfilling and FUN it is to be a part of this great organization! More about volunteering can be found here: www.visionresourcecentercc.org/you-can-help

We will also need your help for our 2nd Annual “Out of Sight” Wing Fling on June 24th at Festival Park in Fayetteville from 3-8 pm. First, we will need you to help spread the word about what it is! Simply put, it’s a Chicken Wing Cook-off in a family-friendly setting. Anyone can sign up to be a competitor with their team (4 people per team, $150 to enter). Then their job is to create the best wings they can bring to the judges’ table. Two Cash prizes of $500 cash prizes: one for Best Wings per the judges and one for the People’s Choice for Best Wings. So there are two opportunities to win! Those that purchase a sampling ticket will get to judge all of the competitor’s wings as they enjoy the rest of the event with vendors, live music, “Eye”Q-Zone, Kid Zone food trucks, and best of all, you will help the visually impaired and blind community in our county.

Here’s how you can support the event:

*Be a Sponsor: Five levels of sponsorship are available to show support and gain exposure.
They all have perks depending on the level:
On Fire! ($2,500)
Smokin’ Hot ($1,000)
Spiced Right ($500),
Sauced Up ($250)

*Be a Vendor: Calling all Food trucks ($150), merchandise, crafts, and small businesses ($100)

*Be placed in our program booklet: Buy an Ad, $25-$75

*Be a volunteer and serve on our committee or work the day of the event.

Contact our office to become a part our 2017 “Out of Sight” Wing Fling committee and for the day of the event. We would love to make you a part of our TEAM. Call us at (910) 483-2719.

A Note from Our Executive Director, Terri Thomas

Terri Thomas“Time flies when you’re having fun…! Our Family Fun Event, the 2nd Annual Out of Sight Wing Fling is happening on Saturday, June 24th at the Festival Park, and we are so excited about what this year will bring. Chicken Wing Competitors are bringing their best skills to the cookers to become the BEST and the PEOPLE’s choice award. By purchasing a sampling ticket, you will be able to taste yummy wings from different competitors and if you don’t like wings, you can still help out an excellent cause. We came up with the tagline “Taste Is Blind.” At the VRC, “Love is Blind” so how fitting is it for our chicken wing cookoff to be #tasteisblind? We will have bands, vendors, food trucks, a VIP Tent, and an “Eye” Q-Zone. What is an “Eye” Q-Zone? It’s a chance to try life as a visually impaired or blind person. There will be many interesting activities for you to try!

We are pleased to thank Mountainaire Farms for being a co-sponsor of the Wing Fling this year! And ARRAY Magazine is our first “On Fire” Sponsor and partner for this year’s event. We would love for our community to join us in helping with our cause to support the blind and visually impaired in this community. We cannot do this without you! Skills training for how to get around without sight is needed and costly, and this event will aid in providing this training and continuing our mission to keep the visually impaired active mentally and physically.

Please make plans to attend, and if it interests you, think about volunteering. All you’d need to do is call the VRC to do so: (910) 483-2719. We can’t wait to work together to make this event even better than last year with your help!

Until next time,”
~Terri

VRC Spotlight: Theresa Steele Williams

20160404_112153Theresa came to the Vision Resource Center in hopes of obtaining assistive technology equipment to help her to remain viable in our community. Ms. Williams prepares taxes with AARP, and she also assists the Cumberland County Coordinating Council for Older Adults with helping seniors with Medicare and Medicaid Insurance information. Florence Rogers Trust allowed us to receive funding to purchase a TOPAZ Ph.D., which is a laptop size magnifier that aids Ms. Williams in continuing the jobs that she loves. Ms. Williams has been utilizing this equipment for almost a year under our Vision Resource Center Loaned Equipment Program. In the picture, you see Ms. Williams holding the TOPAZ and smiling from ear to ear. Our blind participants want to be viable and useful in our community, and we are so glad we could be a part of her happiness!
