Love is BLIND! February 2018 at the VRC

Have we mentioned how much we love serving the blind and visually impaired of Cumberland County? We LOVE being in their corner and LOVE seeing our blind and visually impaired advocate for themselves! We also send lots of love to our supporters and donors–thank you for caring and giving to this worthy cause. We want you to know that we feel the love as well. We are so blessed and look forward to another outstanding month here!

February is a busy month for the VRC. We have numerous social outings, and we’re planning hard for our newly birthed advocacy group, Pavers Unlimited; to get out there and make a difference in the Cape Fear region in 2018. We have education lined up as well as enrichment. And as an answer to our questions from our blind and visually impaired, we’re offering many opportunities for socialization this month. If you have ideas, please let us know. We’re continually trying to improve!

The VRC needs YOU!

4059227_origPlease consider volunteering with us. We need YOU on our team. It’s fun, comfortable, and you will change lives by helping our blind and visually impaired via activity or in the office. A few of our volunteer opportunities include bowling, help a blind person on our field trips (only assist if they need you), help in the office (answering phones, and filing), and many more. Please call, and we will happily get you started! (910) 483-2719

A Note from Our Executive Director, Terri Thomas:
CharlesBroadwell&TerrieThomasIn commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday/holiday, Pavers Unlimited was born. This advocacy group of blind and visually impaired adults will begin attending our city and county government meetings, not for funding, but to be heard. There are blind pedestrian signs to be placed in neighborhoods and the Pavers want to work along with complementary paratransit (Fast Trac) to improve this current much-needed service. I could feel the energy and passion in the room that they will advocate for themselves, while we provide the transportation and the eyes to read documents associated with concerns and improvements to our city/county. They want to make a difference, and the VRC will help them to be the catalysts of change. We will meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at the Center, 11:00-1: 00 p.m. All the programs that we do every month would not be possible without Cumberland County, UW, Cumberland Community Foundation, Elizabeth Hudspeth grant and Knights for the Blind. We will never forget our wonderful private donors that believe in this great work.
